About Us
The Band has been set up by the London Philharmonic Orchestra - and you'll get to meet some of the players at the Band rehearsals.
Here are some answers to questions you might have.
How often does the band meet?
The band usually meets for a project each term. We have a mixture of whole days of music as well as evenings after school/ college. We have regular performance opportunities across the year.
Can anyone join?
Anyone who lives or studies in South London, is aged 15-19 and loves music.
What kind of music does the band play?
The band creates its own music which will be influenced by the music they like and listen to. Recent tracks have been influenced by Hip-Hop, RnB, Jazz, Classical, Rock, Bangra, Grime. Soul, Reggae…
Are there auditions?
There are no auditions for The Band. However, if you are interested in joining, it is very important to let us know by emailing Caz at caz.vale@lpo.org.uk or joining the mailing list.
What if I can’t come to all rehearsals?
If you know that you can’t make a rehearsal please let us know at the beginning of the term when you sign up. Many of our projects do ask you to attend all sessions, as we don’t have much time to write, rehearse AND perform music for a performance.
I don’t play an instrument. Can I still get involved?
Yes – we welcome singers so if your vocal chords are your instrument please get in touch.
We can also offer some music technology/ music management places should you prefer to be backstage.
Where does the band rehearse?
The band rehearses in various spaces within Royal Festival Hall, Southbank Centre, London. It’s easy to get to – the nearest station and bus stops are at Waterloo and then it is just a short walk. If you sign up, we’ll send you a map.
What times does the band rehearse?
See the term dates on our main homepage.
If you are interested in joining The Band, but know you can’t make all the rehearsals, please get in touch. You might still be able to join.
Will I get a chance to perform?
Yes. Previous performances have been at local summer festival events as well as bigger opportunities in Royal Festival Hall and Southbank Centre’s Clore Ballroom.
I’m a pianist / keyboard player / drummer – I can’t carry my instrument – what should I do?
Sign up and we will get in touch. We will be bringing heavy instruments to the sessions.
How much does it cost to join?
Nothing, the band is totally free – we just need your enthusiasm and commitment!
What level do I have to be?
We want talented people, who enjoy playing together and working as a team. We are not looking for specific levels on your instruments – we believe that anyone at any level can join the band and become a valuable member.
What happens in rehearsals?
We work both in big and small groups, in a structured jam/workshop session – led by our workshop leader and guest musicians. Ideas are worked up to form full length tracks. Individuals are given chances to improvise and take solos as well as work together in sections.
