About Us
The Band has been set up by the London Philharmonic Orchestra - and you'll get to meet some of the players at the Band rehearsals.
Here are some answers to questions you might have.
How often does the band meet?
The band has weekly sessions throughout school terms that culminate in a concert.
Can anyone join?
Anyone who lives or studies in Lambeth, Southwark or Lewisham, is aged 15-19 and loves music.
What kind of music does the band play?
The band creates its own music which will be influenced by the music you like and listen to, including Hip-Hop, RnB, Jazz, Classical, Bangra, Grime....
Are there auditions?
No there are no auditions. However, if you are interested in joining, it is very important to let us know by emailing jointheband@lpo.org.uk or filling out the form on the 'register' page..
We need to have a balance of instruments and vocal skills in the band - so places may be limited.
What if I can’t come to all rehearsals?
If you know that you can’t make a rehearsal please let us know at the beginning of the term. Please make every effort to come to the rehearsals as the music is created by the members of the band and it is important that you have your creative input.
I don’t play an instrument. Can I still get involved?
We're looking for some singers for the band.
If you are interested in sound production you can get involved with the technical management of the group.
Where does the band rehearse?
The band rehearses at various spaces within the Royal Festival Hall, Southbank Centre. It’s easy to get to – the nearest station and bus stops are at Waterloo and then it is just a short walk. If you sign up, we’ll send you a map.
What times does the band rehearse?
Rehearsals are on Tuesday nights, 6.30-9pm. This term, there will be an extra rehearsal on Saturday 20th Feb, 2.30-5.30pm and before the concert on Friday 12th March.
If you are interested in joining The Band, but know you can’t make all the rehearsals, please get in touch. You might still be able to join.
Will I get a chance to perform?
Each term there is at least one performance opportunity with The Band. This spring we will be playing in Southbank Centre’s ‘Friday Tonic’ concert series on the Clore Ballroom, Friday 12th March, 5.30pm. The Band have also performed in the Royal Festival Hall.
I’m a pianist / keyboard player / drummer – I can’t carry my instrument – what should I do?
Fill in the form and we’ll contact you. We will be bringing heavy instruments to the sessions.
How much does it cost to join?
Nothing, the band is totally free – we just want enthusiasm!
What level do I have to be?
We want talented people, who enjoy playing together and working as a team. We are not looking for specific levels on your instruments – we believe that anyone, at any level can join the band and become a valuable member.
What happens in rehearsals?
We work both in big and small groups, in a structured jam/workshop session – lead by Phil Mullen our workshop leader. Ideas and motifs are worked up to form full length songs. Individuals are given chances to improvise and take solos as well as work together in sections.
