Sunday 7 October 2007

On Sunday 7 October, the London Philharmonic Orchestra held an evening of celebration at the Royal Festival Hall, marking exactly 75 years since its founder, Sir Thomas Beecham, unveiled his new London Philharmonic Orchestra to the public and press.

With the Royal Festival Hall decked out in white and pink balloons, special guests and concert goers were invited to a range of foyer activities in the afternoon, including a Tea Dance, a concert by the Orchestra's Double Bass section, and a performance of gospel music by Grange and Redriff Primary Schools courtesy of Southwark EiC (Excellence in Cities), one of the Orchestra's long-established education partners.

Special guests of the Orchestra joined Thomas Beecham Group Patrons, Benefactors and Principal Friends for a pre-concert 75th Birthday drinks reception, whilst Affiliate Friends and Friends members enjoyed a glass of bubbly in the Orchestra's Friends Bar.

After the concert, the entire audience was invited to join Orchestra staff and musicians for drinks on the Ballroom Floor, as The Rt Hon. Margaret Hodge MP, Minister of State for Culture, Media and Sport proposed a toast to the Orchestra's 75th Birthday. The celebrations then continued with music provided by the Orchestra's RENGA Ensemble.

“Everything you ever wanted to know about Woodwind, but were afraid to ask!”
An evening with the Orchestra's Woodwind section

Thursday 10 April 2008

Following the very popular brass and percussion evenings over the last two seasons, this year we turn our attention to the Orchestra's Woodwind section for a fun evening of performance at the Orchestra's regular rehearsal venue, Henry Wood Hall.

Members of the woodwind section will show off their skills and virtuosity, performing a selection of their favourite pieces, guiding guests through the various instruments in the woodwind section as well as providing a glimpse into life in the Orchestra. The performance will be coupled with a drinks reception on arrival and a post-performance informal buffet supper served in Henry Wood Hall's stunning crypt, where guests can chat to musicians and staff.

There are still tickets remaining for this event, open to all London Philharmonic Orchestra Friends, Benefactors and Thomas Beecham Group Patrons and their guests.
