The
Orchestra's Russian-themed Gala on 2nd June 2004 at the Guildhall
proved a huge success, raising nearly £140,000 towards
the Orchestra's work. Following a champagne reception in the
Art Gallery, guests were delighted by a performance of Tchaikovsky's
String Serenade, conducted by Vladimir Jurowski, and a sumptuous
dinner in the Great Hall. Later in the evening a short film
about the the Orchestra's Education and Community Programme
was shown. Natasha Perrin, an auctioneer from Christie's,
held a very successful charity auction that raised just over
£13,000. Auction lots included a weeks holiday in Tuscany
at the Italian home of the late Sir Georg Solti, a holiday
to Athens for two to join the Orchestra on tour in January
2005, and a private lunch and musical recital at West Green
House, Hampshire. We were pleased to be joined on the evening
by HRH The Duke of Kent KG, the Russian Ambassador His Excellency
Grigory B Karasin, and illustrious sopranos, Yvonne Kenny
and Majella Cullagh.

Other
events during the second half of the Orchestras 2003-04
season included a private recital, lunch and tour of the beautiful
gardens at West Green House, Hampshire, and a Summer drinks
reception at the residence of the Australian High Commissioner,
Michael L'Estrange, which introduced key Australian business
contacts in the UK to the Orchestra's work. In early July,
the Orchestra also held an event at Christies to promote
its partnership with Opera Rara and to raise funds towards
the 23rd October collaboration. Guests were invited to a champagne
reception and a private view of Old Master pictures, followed
by a performance by celebrated sopranos Nelly Miricioiu and
Majella Cullagh.
