Annual Appeal 2011/12

In aid of the Community Programme

Despite living close to the Royal Festival Hall, many people living in South London have never visited the venue or heard an orchestra perform. We are committed to our work in the community to ensure that as many people as possible can access and enjoy music of the highest quality. There are three dynamic projects within the Community Programme, providing inspirational musical opportunities for children and their families.

Animate Orchestra
Animate Orchestra is a young person’s ‘orchestra for the 21st century’. It is open to young instrumentalists in Lewisham and Greenwich, all instruments are welcome, and it offers a creative pathway for them to continue their playing as they make the transition from primary to secondary education – a time when many young musicians give up. Young people make music side by side with London Philharmonic Orchestra musicians, in intensive sessions in each borough, and in joint-borough projects. Next year we hope to expand into Southwark and Lambeth.

‘It was the first time Georgia has played in an ensemble and she found it thoroughly inspirational … it was definitely the highlight of the Easter holiday.’ Parent

The Band
Following on from Animate Orchestra, The Band is our fusion ensemble for young people aged 15-19, at which they meet to write and perform their own music. Members improvise, create, and rehearse their own music – from classical to jazz, hip hop, rock, and more. Sessions are led by some of the UK’s leading tutors whilst London Philharmonic Orchestra musicians add a unique inspirational element by rehearsing alongside participants, and playing with them at performances in high-profile venues.

‘When I first came to The Band I was amazed how everyone worked so well with each other … and I thought this is a place where I can really fit in, make music and share ideas.’ Member of The Band

FUNharmonics Family Concerts
The Orchestra’s Family Concerts are an interactive introduction for all the family to music and the orchestra, presented by Chris Jarvis of CBeebies. Free foyer activities before and after the concert include Have-a-Go sessions enabling children to try out a range of orchestral instruments with our musicians; the Human Orchestra provides fun rhythmic sessions where music is performed using body percussion, singing, drumming, and clapping; and a guest youth ensemble joins each concert, giving its own performance on the Royal Festival Hall’s Clore Ballroom floor.

‘The concert was fantastic. Thomas enjoyed himself, he danced to every single piece the whole way through. I will definitely be taking him again.’ Parent

Your Support
The Community Programme offers unique musical opportunities to people living in South London. To ensure there is no barrier to participation, activities are offered at low or no cost. This essential work takes place entirely through the support of charitable donations, and this year we need your help more than ever to ensure that these projects continue.
