LPO at the BBC Proms: 24 July 2016

This year’s LPO BBC Prom saw the world premiere of Magnus Lindberg’s Two Episodes, followed by a performance of Beethoven’s masterful 9th Symphony.

Read the reviews here:

‘The London Philharmonic and conductor Vladimir Jurowski produced a sound that was piercingly clear’.
‘It was a revelation, which had the paradoxical effect of making Beethoven’s piece seem both more urgent and intense, and more classical’.
Ivan Hewett, The Telegraph, 25 July 2016 (4 stars)

‘Vladimir Jurowski oversaw a cerebral performance of the Ninth symphony’.
Erica Jeal, The Guardian, 26 July 2016 (4 stars)

‘The LPO made a virtuoso job of it’.
‘For intellectual quality, though, Jurowski could hardly be bettered’.
Richard Fairman, Financial Times, 27 July 2016

‘Eschewing convention, the humble Jurowski guided the LPO with economy and deference, allowing them to ‘become brothers’.
‘In so many ways the LPO and Jurowski captured the communal spirit of the symphony, in both their approach and their delivery’.
Phil Barrett, Bachtrack, 26 July 2016

‘Jurowski kept and immaculately-prepared performance rhythmically taut and instrumentally well balanced’.
‘So far, so miraculous, with the orchestra moving as one under its admired principal conductor’s meticulous guidance’.
David Nice, The Arts Desk, 25 July 2016

‘The LPO’s precision gave the melodies an added intensity without detracting from their lyricism’.
‘This was a refreshing performance that firmly grasped the attention throughout’.
Antony Hodgson, Classical Source, 25 July 2016

‘The power of Lindberg’s music, and the undimmed voltage of the Beethoven, led to a remarkably charged evening’.
‘Jurowski seemed to have an X-ray vision into the score, and the whole performance oozed confidence’.
Colin Clarke, Seen and Heard International, 25 July 2016

‘[Vladimir Jurowski] is that relative rarity, a conductor unflamboyant yet charismatic, and he emits musicality as if it were a light beam’.
‘There was biting urgency in the very coloration of the first movement, the result of a fierce but unobtrusive discipline’.
Paul Driver, The Sunday Times, 31 July 2016
