Concert Reviews: 10 June 2015 Debut Sounds

On 10 June, Debut Sounds celebrated the London Philharmonic Orchestra’s young talent programmes: LPO Young Composers and Foyle Future Firsts. Over the past year, members of both programmes have been supported by the Orchestra and its Education & Community Department to explore new ideas, learn new skills and work closely with the Orchestra’s musicians; the concert was the culmination of this work by some of the most exciting young musicians in classical music.

The young composers received advice and support from LPO Composer in Residence, Magnus Lindberg, who also conducted the four world premieres. His own work, Aventures, was also performed.

The four works were: Paulina Zalubska's Into the Darkness, Peter Longworth's Fiabe Cavalleresche (Knightly Fables), Sergio Cote's Type and Jonathan Brigg's Sinful Sinfonies.

'You don’t get many concerts like this, a treat for the open-minded and curious music-lover – so well done the London Philharmonic for its Young Composers and Foyle Future First initiatives

'Each of the creators no doubt benefited from working with Magnus Lindberg, currently the LPO’s Composer in Residence, both as a tutor and as a conductor; all four premieres were assured.

'The LPO/Foyle contingent did Lindberg proud. It was a thoroughly worthwhile evening.'
Colin Anderson, Classical Source, 11 June 2015
