Concert Reviews: 9 March 2016

On Wednesday 9 March, LPO Principal Conductor and Artistic Advisor Vladimir Jurowski once again joined the Orchestra to conduct a performance of Rachmaninoff’s romantic Piano Concerto No. 3, as well as Zemlinsky’s ethereal work The Mermaid.

Read the reviews here:

‘The LPO’s mix of opulence and clarity has always suited Zemlinsky’s sometimes extravagant soundscapes, and the big, concertante violin solo was beautifully played by Pieter Schoeman.'
Tim Ashley, The Guardian, 10 March 2016

‘Clear, economical direction by Vladimir Jurowski resulted in taut rhythms and smart ensemble from the LPO.’
‘The opulent writing was played with great clarity, allowing the many solo turns – in particular by leader Pieter Schoeman – to shine.’
Rebecca Franks, The Times, 10 March 2016
(4 stars; subscription only)

‘Zemlinsky’s sound-world is diamond-bright, and the structure has a pellucid clarity; Jurowski has done music a service by championing it’.
Michael Church, Independent, 10 March 2016

‘This performance was a game-changer, wonderfully well-played, whether powerful or intimate, and Pieter Schoeman’s violin solos were beguiling.’
‘Jurowski’s conducting was a labour of love, and the LPO ... was on top form to create an enjoyable and enlightening experience.’
Colin Anderson, Classical Source, 10 March 2016

‘Jurowski has a proven track record as one of the leading advocates of the music of Zemlinsky and his contemporaries, and he piloted the LPO’s players through the choppy seas of the mermaid’s realm with real mystery.’
Matthew Rye, Backtrack, 10 March 2016

‘the LPO’s woodwind and strings produced gorgeous textures and colours, setting the scene beautifully.’
‘This was an impressive concert by the Jurowski and the LPO and they are to be congratulated for introducing Zemlinsky’s opulent score to a wider audience.’
Robert Beattie, Seen and Heard International, 11 March 2016
