Concert reviews: 27 October 2017

On Friday 27 October 2017 we were joined by Inon Barnatan for a performance of Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 5 'Emperor' and Shostakovich's Symphony No. 7 'Leningrad', led by LPO Principle Guest Conductor Andrés Orozco-Estrada. Read the reviews here:

‘This LPO South Bank performance was itself highly impressive. The determined opening was a straightforward, non-nonsense statement of intent ... Whirligig met parody met huge brass peroration in the finale; the enthusiastic reception was well deserved. It’s great to hear the LPO on top form under a conductor they clearly respect.’ Colin Clarke, seenandheard-international.com, 29 October 2017

★★★★☆  ‘This fascinating exploration of heroism managed to avoid the obvious trap of making the Beethoven feel anaemic without any compromise in the brutality of the “Leningrad" ... a memorable concert for its broad scope as much as its shattering climaxes’ Rohan Shotton, bachtrack.com, 30 October 2017

‘From start to finish Orozco-Estrada steered a gripping journey ... On phenomenal form, the London Philharmonic matched him beat for beat, every section excelling, every principal deserving individual credit, playing together and off each other with an impeccability of exchange, ensemble, chording and dynamic finesse ready for the recording studio (and microphones were in the hall). Breathtaking!’ Ateş Orga, classicalsource.com, 29 October 2017
