Concert Reviews: 26 February 2016

On Friday 26 February, the London Philharmonic Orchestra’s Principal Guest Conductor Andrés Orozco-Estrada led the Orchestra in a performance of Mendlessohn’s Overture to A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Khachaturian’s Violin Concerto, Strauss’s Macbeth and Stravinsky’s luminous ballet score to The Firebird.

‘The LPO, on this showing, was reminiscent of the legendary pre-war Beecham recordings in terms of woodwind detail and balance and of finesse in tempo graduations’.‘The dynamic range Orozco-Estrada coaxed from the LPO was, frankly, breathtaking – at times, one hardly dare breathe for fear of breaking the spell’.
Robert Matthew-Walker, Classical Source, 27 February 2016

‘Utilising the full forces of the LPO, this was another no holds barred reading, urged on by the young Colombian conductor’.
‘This was the LPO Brass show – raucous trombones in the Infernal Dance, John Ryan’s noble horn call announcing the closing hymn’.
Mark Pullinger, Bachtrack, 27 February 2016
