Concert Reviews: 25 January 2017

On Wednesday 25 January 2017, the LPO's Principal Conductor and Artistic Advisor Vladimir Jurowski led the Orchestra in a performance of Giya Kancheli's Mourned by the Wind (with Isabelle van Keulen), Martinů's Memorial to Lidice, and Vaughan Williams's Symphony No. 9.

Read the reviews here:

Mourned by the Wind, is a work of pure grief for a close friend ... the LPO found intensity both in the quiet passages and in orchestral outbursts ... It is an impressive work and a performance which hopefully opened the eyes of many towards this most underappreciated composer ... The star of the evening was, however, a most illuminating performance of Vaughan Williams Ninth (and last) Symphony ... A thoroughly convincing and satisfying performance that made total sense of an elusive and neglected masterpiece.’

‘Isabelle van Keulen was masterly in her intense concentration in the solo role, and she was supported by the superb control of Vladimir Jurowski and his musicians who produced some ravishingly quiet moments, as well as stupendous loud ones. Thanks to the quality of performance, the work was remarkably absorbing ... Clearly, the orchestra has [Vaughan Williams's] music in its blood ... It was a gripping and engrossing performance.’
Robert Hugill, planethugill.com, 26 January 2017

‘[Jurowski’s] performance of the Ninth Symphony was a revelation. His direction was precise, clear-sighted, yet passionate in nature. There were no woolly edges in either his conception or realisation of the score. The emotional ebbs and flow in the first movement were perfectly pointed, and he obtained perfectly balanced, highly committed playing from the LPO, whose members seemed to relish such insightful conducting.’
Alan Sanders, seenandheard-international.com

‘Beyond the assurance of the performances, this programme continued that notable LPO trend for intelligent repertoire choices ... I noticed a word in the programme about financial supporters to The Kancheli Appeal who made this performance – and other adventurous programming by the LPO – possible. Their generosity and Jurowski’s continued influence on such programming should not be taken for granted.’
