The
London Philharmonic Youth Orchestra performs a feast of 20th
Century Classics at St John's Smith Square, London on 25 July
On Friday 25 July, 7.30pm at St John's Smith Square the London
Philharmonic Youth Orchestra (LPYO) takes to the stage for
a concert which is the culmination of the very first LPYO
Summer Academy. This groundbreaking Academy, endorsed by violinist
Anne-Sophie Mutter, is a five day residential course which
aims to give young musicians a unique opportunity to work
with members of the London Philharmonic Orchestra who will
lead masterclasses, rehearsals and give informal advice and
support.
The concert is not only the culmination of the course but
also gives the public the chance to hear this exciting group
of young musicians. The concert is opened by Bartók's
Music for Strings, Percussion
and Celeste, as heard in Stanley Kubrik's film The
Shining. Following this top trumpeter Marvin Stamm
(pictured), who toured widely during the 60s and 70s with
Woody Herman, Frank Sinatra, and Benny Goodman, joins the
Orchestra for Gershwin's Porgy
and Bess and the concert is finished by Stravinsky's
war inspired Symphony in 3 Movements.
The concert is conducted by the Director of the Summer Academy,
Scott Stroman, with special guest Joe Muccioli conducting
the Gerswhin.
Tickets are priced at £10 and £6, with concession
tickets at £2. They are available from the St Johns
Smith Square box office on 020 7222 1061 (Mon-Fri 10am-5pm)
