Vladimir
Jurowski will be appointed Principal Conductor of the London
Philharmonic Orchestra at the start of the Orchestra's 2007/08
season. The 34-year-old Russian will become the Orchestra's
twelfth Principal Conductor since 1932, and will take up the
reins as the ensemble moves back to its refurbished Royal
Festival Hall home in its 75th anniversary year.
Jurowski's meteoric rise since his debut at the Wexford Festival
in 1995 has attracted widespread and consistent attention
from audiences and the media. In 2004 Jurowski topped BBC
Music Magazine's poll of the world's top young conductors,
and earlier this year he was named classical artist of the
year by Time Out magazine, also receiving a nomination in
the conductor category of the prestigious Royal Philharmonic
Society Awards. Alongside his work with the London Philharmonic
Orchestra - of which he has been Principal Guest Conductor
for three years - Jurowski is known for his work as Music
Director at Glyndebourne Festival Opera and as Principal Guest
Conductor of the Russian National Orchestra.
'In Vladimir we have found an
exceptional musician whose relationship with the Orchestra
has proved irrepressible', said Timothy Walker, Chief
Executive and Artistic Director of the London Philharmonic
Orchestra. 'His involvement with
the ensemble pervades all aspects of its work from eclectic
programmes on the South Bank to performances at Glyndebourne
and the development of our education programme and in-house
recording label. Vladimir's creativity and vitality brings
enormous potential to the organisation.'
'I am thrilled and deeply honoured
to be offered the position of Principal Conductor of the London
Philharmonic Orchestra from the beginning of the 2007/08 season,
following in the footsteps of such illustrious names as Bernard
Haitink, Sir Georg Solti, Klaus Tennstedt and Kurt Masur',
said Vladimir Jurowski.
'During the last few years in
my role as Music Director at Glyndebourne Festival Opera and
also as Principal Guest Conductor of the London Philharmonic
Orchestra I have formed a very close bond with the players.
Their passion and enthusiasm for music is really infectious
and is something I immediately connected with when I first
worked with the ensemble five years ago. I very much look
forward to the seasons ahead in which I hope we will produce
ever more interesting and exciting concerts. It also seems
particularly fitting to be taking on this role just as the
Royal Festival Hall reopens.'
'I look forward to continuing
and building on the outstanding work that Maestro Masur has
achieved with the Orchestra during his time as Principal Conductor
and am delighted that the Maestro will continue to work closely
with the Orchestra in the years ahead.'
Jurowski's position as Principal Conductor is supported financially
by long-standing sponsor of the Orchestra: Aviva, the international
savings, investments and insurance group. Announcing the sponsorship
on behalf of Aviva, Richard Harvey, Group Chief Executive
said: 'Today signifies a new
phase in our long-standing partnership with the London Philharmonic
Orchestra. We're both forward thinking organisations and the
appointment of Vladimir Jurowski to the position of Principal
Conductor of the London Philharmonic Orchestra heralds an
exciting future for musicians and audiences alike'.
Vladimir Jurowski was born in Moscow and studied there and
in Dresden and Berlin. He was appointed First Kapellmeister
of the Komische Oper Berlin in 1997, subsequently working
with many of the world's major opera companies including the
Royal Opera House Covent Garden, Teatro La Fenice de Venezia,
Opéra Bastille de Paris, Semperoper Dresden, La Scala
Milan and at the Metropolitan Opera New York. Since then he
has worked with symphony orchestras throughout the world including
the Berlin Philharmonic, Rotterdam Philharmonic, Oslo Philharmonic
and Gothenburg Symphony Orchestras in Europe and the Philadelphia,
Pittsburgh Symphony and Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestras
in the United States. He will make debuts with the Royal Concertgebouw
Orchestra and Dresden Staskapelle Orchestra later this year.

Jurowski and this orchestra
are good for each other.
Erica Jeal, The Guardian, 31
October 2003
It was the whole concert - not just Rachmaninov's fiendish
metric changes - that confirmed Jurowski and the LPO as
London's most dynamic partnership.
Andrew Clark, The Financial
Times, 31 October 2003
The LPO's playing for Vladimir Jurowski was the chief virtue
of the new production of La Cenerentola down at Glyndebourne
last week, and this concert confirmed the rapport in their
partnership.
Andrew Clements, The Guardian,
27 May 2005
It is increasingly obvious that the most creative force
in London's orchestral life is Vladimir Jurowski
every
concert generates a sense of discovery, courtesy of Jurowski's
deep musical sensibility and dry charisma.
Andrew Clark, Financial Times,
8 December 2005
I suspect we have the brilliant, young Principal Guest Conductor
of the London Philharmonic Orchestra, Vladimir Jurowski,
to thank for the most original programme so far in the anniversary
games of Mozart and Shostakovich.
Annette Morreau, The Independent,
20 February 2006
Jurowski's concerts are turning into a festival in all but
name, so inventive is the programme-building and so fresh
the music-making.
