London Philharmonic Orchestra

Performances Jan-Mar 2008
London Philharmonic Orchestra's Composer in Residence

London Philharmonic Orchestra Principal Conductor Vladimir Jurowski conducts works by Mark-Anthony Turnage in three separate tours in early 2008, in addition to concerts at the Royal Festival Hall.

Like Benjamin Britten's before him, Turnage's music for singers seems to match perfectly the contours of the English language and human voice, whilst his lifelong love of woodwind instruments is seen in works including Hidden Love Song for soprano saxophone and orchestra, premièred by the Orchestra in 2006, and in Riffs and Refrains for clarinet and orchestra, of which Michael Collins gives the London première on 13 February 2008 conducted by Marin Alsop. There's also a revival of the spellbinding Evening Songs (performed and recorded by the Orchestra in 2004) on 2 February, and the London première of Turnage's tribute to one of his early mentors: Lullaby for Hans, written for the 80th birthday of Hans Werner Henze and conducted by Vladimir Jurowski (alongside works by Henze himself) on 30 January.

30 January : Evening Songs : London, Royal Festival Hall

2 February : Lullaby for Hans (London première) : London, Royal Festival Hall

'Mark-Anthony Turnage's Lullaby for Hans [is] a reflective seven minutes from 2006 in honour of Hans Werner Henze's 80th birthday. As lyric phrases slowly percolated in an atmosphere calm but alert, it was easy to imagine the two composers on Henze's Italian terrace, musing and drinking into the dying light.'
Geoff Brown, The Times, 5 February 2008

13 February : Riffs and Refrains (London première) : London, Royal Festival Hall  [Marin Alsop]
