London Philharmonic Orchestra's Composer in Residence

Two CDs on the London Philharmonic Orchestra's own label create a lasting record of Mark-Anthony Turnage's relationship with the Orchestra.

The first CD received highly positive reviews on its release in 2005, with The Guardian naming it '..exhilarating, explosive stuff.' The second CD was released this February, and includes Hidden Love Song, commissioned by the London Philharmonic Orchestra in 2005. Sound clips in the music player below give you the chance to hear excerpts from both CDs.

When I Woke
Yet Another Set To

This CD of works by Mark-Anthony Turnage was released on the London Philharmonic Orchestra's own label in 2005. The works skilfully blend classical and jazz idioms, modernism and tradition, including When I Woke, a song cycle setting texts by Dylan Thomas, and the trombone concerto Yes Another Set To written for trombonist Christian Lindberg.

These four performances were admired and enjoyed by critics, audiences and musicians and have an electrifying quality which is captured on these live recordings - not only première recordings, but in two cases live recordings of world premières.

Jonathan Nott, Vladimir Jurowski, Marin Alsop - conductors
Gerald Finley - baritone
Christian Lindberg - trombone

MARK-ANTHONY TURNAGE
Twice Through the Heart
Hidden Love Song
The Torn Fields

Human relationships have long fascinated Mark-Anthony Turnage. The three works on this new CD offer strikingly different glimpses of the human interface: a chilling first-person account of marital murder, a touchingly titled musical gift with soprano saxophone solo, and an acerbic view of the destruction of war.

'After three years working with Turnage, their composer in residence, the LPO speak his language brilliantly: listen especially in The Torn Fields to the molten sound of the winds and brass. And Alsop's commitment is total, whether she's conjuring the composer's urban whoops, battlefield desolation or percussive tinkling in Hidden Love Song, suggesting the sounds of a clock. ' Geoff Brown, The Times, February 2008

Marin Alsop - conductor
Sarah Connolly - mezzo-soprano
Martin Robertson - soprano saxophone
Gerald Finley - baritone
