Three major milestones are occurring simultaneously as our
2007/08 season begins: we celebrate our seventy-fifth anniversary
season with a move back into our splendidly restored home,
the Royal Festival Hall at Southbank Centre, with our new
Principal Conductor, Vladimir Jurowski.
The Orchestra first worked with Vladimir Jurowski in 2001.
Since then the relationship has proved unstoppable - both
in our work at Glyndebourne Festival Opera where Vladimir
is Music Director and in memorable concerts at the Royal
Festival Hall pre-closure, not to mention the wonderful
creative partnership that has been our time at the Queen
Elizabeth Hall from 2005 to 2007. With the Orchestra's four-month
residency at Glyndebourne, we are in the lucky position
of having a partnership with our Principal Conductor which
will be stronger than that enjoyed by almost any other orchestra
worldwide.
In appointing Vladimir we have recognised that he is the
right musician to build on the Orchestra's famed and distinctive
sound: to mould it, refine it, and make it something even
greater. Known for its performances of music by Mahler,
the Orchestra opens the season with a performance of Das
klagende Lied conducted by Vladimir, and will go on to play
the composer's first five symphonies, works appropriate
for the re-opening of our splendid home venue, and which
suitably herald the coming seventy-five years whilst respectfully
acknowledging the last.
Other highlights include the five Beethoven piano concertos
with four strikingly different pianists; a chance to enter
the glorious sound world of Erich Wolfgang Korngold who
died fifty years ago; a feast of music from this island
including a tribute to Edward Elgar in his anniversary year;
contemporary music from Mark-Anthony Turnage, Matthias Pintscher,
Hans Werner Henze and Jennifer Higdon; a host of legendary
soloists and conductors with welcome returns from previous
regulars Christoph Eschenbach, Gennadi Rozhdestvensky and
Neeme Järvi; and perhaps most excitingly, the chance
to hear some great new talents - all selected for their
musicianship, presence and ability to communicate: among
them conductors Joseph Wolfe and Stamatia Karampini, violinists
Nicola Benedetti, Julia Fischer, Lisa Batiashvili and Yossif
Ivanov, pianists Sigurd Slåttebrekk, Sunwook Kim,
Dejan Lazic and Martin Helmchen, as well as a four-concert
residency from Marisol Montalvo, a very special soprano.
Watch out for them - they are all bound to impress.
On 7 June 2008, in celebration of our groundbreaking education
and community work, community musicians and choirs come
together with the Orchestra under the baton of Vladimir
Jurowski to perform classical works and a new piece by Principal
Horn Richard Bissill and Eugene Skeef. This will be a unique
and unmissable performance.
Finally my thanks are due to our loyal and supportive audiences.
Without you, the London Philharmonic Orchestra would not
be celebrating its 75th anniversary year, and I thank you
for your significant support. I do hope you will join us
for this special season.
