Meet the runners: Maddie Ridout

Ahead of ‘Team LPO’ taking on the Vitality British 10K London run on Sunday 10 July, meet the Orchestra’s Assistant Personnel Manager, Maddie Ridout. Find out about her training journey to date and see if she has any running tips for beginners.

Why are you taking part in the 10K?

Maddie (pictured front row, second from left): A couple of Orchestra members overheard me talking about running a while back and told me I must sign up for this LPO run. At that point I had never ran 10k, but was able to do 5k fairly easily, so set myself the target of working towards this run. It’s a great way of getting to know the musicians and I’m really looking forward to it!

Have you had any experience of working on any of the LPO’s education programmes?

Being the Assistant Personnel Manager, I am lucky enough to be at all of our concerts including the BrightSparks and FUNharmonics concerts. It’s amazing to see how enthusiastic the children are, and how much they learn from these events. They all scream with delight when the Orchestra walk on with their instruments, which is wonderful to watch.

How experienced a runner are you?

I have been running on and off over the last few years, but finally got into a good routine back in December and can’t imagine not doing it now! I try to run 3 times a week and make one of them a 10k. My next challenge is a half marathon in September, so I am also trying to build up to that.

Do you find that running has any particular advantages for you?

I have the same schedule as the musicians as I am on the road with them, so running in my own time is a lot easier than going to organised classes or the gym for exercise. When we have a long break between a rehearsal and concert, I sometimes try and get out for a run weaving in and out of the tourists on the Southbank! I also took my running stuff on our last tour to Moscow and a group of us did the Parkrun in Gorky Park.

Do you have any tips for people who are considering taking up running?

Go for it! When I first started I could hardly run to the end of my road and would then need to stop. We’ve all got to start somewhere, so don’t be put off as you can build up your stamina quite quickly.
