George Apel and Keith Harvey

We were saddened to hear of the deaths of two former London Philharmonic Orchestra musicians in the last few weeks: George Apel (violin) and Keith Harvey (cello).

George Apel was in the Orchestra for 30 years, starting in 1961 before emigrating to Australia in 1991. He began as Second Violin, before moving to First. He performed under LPO founder Sir Malcolm Sargent and former LPO Principal Conductors Bernard Haitink, Sir George Solti and Klaus Tennstedt.

Keith Harvey was appointed Principal Cellist of the LPO upon graduating from the Royal Academy of Music: the youngest ever principal cello of the LPO. He stayed with us for 5 years before joining the English Chamber Orchestra as First Cellist and then founding the Gabrieli Ensemble and Quartet. Read more in The Strad.
