CD reviews: Genius of Film Music 1960s-80s

In September 2015, the London Philharmonic Orchestra released a live recording charting the development of the 'Hollywood sound'. Film music expert John Mauceri joined the Orchestra to present music from Psycho, Star Trek, and Lawrence of Arabia, and the first release of the orchestral score to Cleopatra, amongst others.

Kristóf Baráti

On Friday 26 February, the London Philharmonic Orchestra’s Principal Guest Conductor Andrés Orozco-Estrada led the Orchestra in a performance of Mendlessohn’s Overture to A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Khachaturian’s Violin Concerto, Strauss’s Macbeth and Stravinsky’s luminous ballet score to The Firebird.

On Friday 12 February, Osmo Vänskä joined the London Philharmonic Orchestra once again to conduct a performance of Korngold’s Violin Concerto and Elgar’s Symphony No. 1, following Nicolai’s comedic overture to The Merry Wives of Windsor, played as part of our Shakespeare400 festival.

Concert Reviews: 10 February 2016

Stephen Hough

On Wednesday 10 February, Osmo Vänskä conducted the London Philharmonic Orchestra in a performance of Dvořák’s Piano Concerto with soloist Stephen Hough, as well as excerpts from Sibelius’s magical incidental music for The Tempest, with soloist Lilli Paasikivi and featuring narrations of the play by renowned British actor Simon Callow.
