Concert reviews: Saturday 21 February 2015

On Saturday 21 February 2015 at Royal Festival Hall, the Orchestra performed a full programme of Beethoven, conducted by Marin Alsop. The programme included Beethoven's Leonore Overture, Symphony No. 7 and Piano Concerto No. 3, performed with soloist David Fray.

Concert Reviews: 7, 8, 11 and 13 February 2015

The first half of February saw the LPO perform three more Rachmaninoff: Inside Out concerts which also included performances of the rarely performed mighty Enescu Symphony No. 3, and audiences were almost literally blown away by Shostakovich’s emotionally draining Symphony No. 4. Younger audiences were enraptured by Colin Matthews’s premiere of The Pied Piper of Hamelin based on Michael Morpurgo’s retelling of the tale of the stranger with the magical flute.

CD reviews – Vaughan Williams Symphonies Nos. 4 & 8

February 2015 saw the release of a new Vaughan Williams CD on the LPO label: his Symphonies Nos. 4 and 8. Conducted by Ryan Wigglesworth and Vladimir Jurowski respectively, these live concert recordings have received great reviews so far...

It’s been a busy and exciting start to 2015 for the LPO: a continuation of the Rachmaninoff: Inside Out series with a concert performance of The Miserly Knight, a commission by Magnus Lindberg, the Orchestra’s new Composer in Residence. Earning particular plaudits from critics and audience members alike was Verdi’s Requiem performed with the London Philharmonic Choir, joined by the 150-year-old eminent Spanish choir, Orfeón Pamplonés.

Concert reviews: Saturday 6 December 2014

Saturday 6 December was the London Philharmonic Orchestra's last Royal Festival Hall concert of 2014, before the Orchestra heads off on tours to Germany, Iceland and China over the next few weeks. Conducted by Vladimir Jurowski, the concert featured the UK premiere of Harrison Birtwistle's Responses: Sweet disorder and the carefully careless for piano and orchestra, performed by Pierre-Laurent Aimard. It also included Stravinsky's Symphonies of Wind Instruments, Messiaen's Oiseaux exotiques and Stravinsky's Orpheus.

Concert reviews: Wednesday 3 December 2014

On Wednesday 3 December at Southbank Centre's Royal Festival Hall, the London Philharmonic Orchestra under its Principal Conductor Vladimir Jurowski performed a concert comprising Szymanowski's Concert Overture, Scriabin's Piano Concerto with soloist Igor Levit, and Rachmaninoff's Symphony No. 1. This concert was part of the Orchestra's year-long Rachmaninoff: Inside Out festival.

CD reviews – Yannick Nézet-Séguin conducts organ works by Poulenc & Saint-Saëns

Released earlier this month on the LPO Label was a CD featuring Poulenc's Organ Concerto and Saint-Saëns's Symphony No. 3 (Organ).
