London Philharmonic Orchestra schools' projects are designed with the aim of enhancing the National Curriculum and are delivered with the support of the Music Services. Priority for participation in projects is given to schools in the Orchestra’s local boroughs of Greenwich, Lambeth, Lewisham and Southwark.

ConcertLink performance

ConcertLink
The LPO’s ConcertLink programme aims to engage pupils attending the BrightSparks concerts, and other concerts in the year, with professional musicians from the Orchestra.  Its principal aim is to link what happens on the concert hall stage to school music making.

The sessions are designed to meet the needs of different age groups and skill level – from one off workshops introducing instruments to younger pupils and supporting wider opportunities through to supporting school ensemble music making with older pupils.

“The Year 5 children and all staff involved thoroughly enjoyed the programme. The LPO musicians were very good with our children and brought out the best in them. It was an invaluable creative experience which offered fantastic opportunities in both composition and performance.”
Wyvil Primary School, Lambeth

Key Stage 1
In connection with the Key Stage 1 BrightSparks concerts, the LPO offers primary schools the opportunity to engage with players from the orchestra through a half day workshop at the school prior to the concert.

Key Stage 2
In connection with the Key Stage 2 BrightSparks concerts, the LPO offers primary schools the opportunity to engage with players from the orchestra through a series of 4 half day workshops at the school pre and post concert.

Key Stage 3
At Key Stage 3 a broader approach is taken and LPO musicians may work with school ensembles with a view to inviting them to perform at a BrightSparks concert or at a pre-concert event linked to an evening concert.

GCSE
The BrightSparks GCSE concert will explore repertoire relevant to the syllabus and will also include young musicians performing alongside the orchestra. In preparation for this event LPO musicians will visit schools to prepare pupils.

The ConcertLink programme is supported by The Candide Charitable Trust, Paul Morgan Charitable Trust, The Steel Charitable Trust, The John Thaw Foundation and The Thistle Trust

Special Composition Projects
Each year the London Philharmonic Orchestra aims to work in depth with approximately 5 schools on a large scale composition project. Inspired by a piece in the LPO repertoire, schools will receive 5 sessions each led by a workshop leader and musicians from the Orchestra.  The sessions will explore the key themes of the repertoire and pupils will be encouraged to develop their own response to the music using the schools' instrumental resources. The project culminates with a pre-concert performance at the Royal Festival Hall.

“I just wanted to say a huge thank you. I've been involved in many, many music projects in schools in the last 20 years and I believe this one was one of the most succesful thanks to your great input.” Grange Primary School, Southwark

Sound Journeys (formerly Adopt-a-Class)
Sound Journeys is the LPO’s work with pupils with Special Educational Needs (SEN). Each year two schools are recommended by the LPO’s local music services. These schools receive 21 workshops each across the academic year.  To ensure the workshops meet the specific needs of the pupils, sessions are designed in conjunction with the class teacher. Regular monitoring meetings throughout the year review the work and make certain the objectives are being met. The workshops aim to:

  • introduce orchestral instruments
  • increase musical awareness - differentiating between slow/fast, loud/soft and high/low.
  • develop skills in composition
  • provide opportunities for performance – including sharing sessions at the end of each term within the school and performances at the Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall.
  • increase communication and social skills through music i.e. listening, appraising, taking turns and group work

“The students' recognition of instruments has definitely improved .........As a group, their performance skills are excellent, before they would have worked individually, in pairs or in small groups of 3, but never as a whole class – so this is a huge achievement. “ Greenvale School, Lewisham
