The International Conductors Academy is a unique partnership between the Allianz Cultural Foundation, the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the Philharmonia Orchestra and the Southbank Centre. The ICA has received considerable attention from the international classical music community, London music press and international artists’ managers and has become recognised as an industry benchmark for launching the careers of the next generation of conductors.
The ICA is a year long, practical programme that places three exceptionally talented young conductors at the very heart of the partner Orchestras’ activities for the duration of each season. By taking part in the ICA, participants will be involved with the daily activities of the Orchestras: observing and conducting rehearsals, receiving conducting tuition from a range of long-established and newly launched conductors of world renown (including Vladimir Jurowski and Esa-Pekka Salonen), taking part in education work and meeting arts administrators and artists’ agents.
Each season is divided into three separate periods of activity, during which the participants will spend time with one or both of the two partner orchestras.
In the final period of the year, the opportunity will be given to all three participants to conduct the lead Orchestra (The London Philharmonic Orchestra in 2011-12) in a shared public performance at the Royal Festival Hall.
Alumni of the scheme include Gustavo Dudamel and Matthew Coorey.
