The London Philharmonic Orchestra has a long and illustrious
history at Glyndebourne, having been the resident symphony
orchestra there every summer for the past forty-six years.
This outstanding artistic partnership continues under Vladimir
Jurowski who is both Music Director of Glyndebourne Festival
Opera and Principal Conductor of the London Philharmonic
Orchestra.
Since the first performances in 1934 - a two-week season
in a purpose built 300-seat theatre - Glyndebourne Festival
Opera has held a unique place in the world of opera, presenting
world-class operatic productions in the heart of the Sussex
countryside. Today the opera season runs for about four
months with performances taking place in its much admired
new opera house, which opened in 1994. Generally, six operas
are presented each summer, often featuring Mozart and Britten,
and also covering early music, romantic operas and contemporary
works. Surrounded by beautiful gardens in which the audience
can picnic during the long dinner interval, Glyndebourne
remains one of the most enchanting experiences of the English
summer season.
